AviFauna was started in 1985 by Erik Hirschfeld, Nils Kjellén and Magnus Ullman. They had seen the ads for British tour operators in British bird journals and thought it would be a good idea to establish their own tour company here in Sweden. The first trip went to Majorca that year. Furthermore, they thought it was a good idea to spend the money from the trips on conservation, so they asked BirdLife Sweden (SOF) if they could own the company, which they agreed to. Over 30 years later the company is still owned by BirdLife Sweden, runs around 40 foreign trips a year and sends all profits to BirdLife Sweden (and to some carefully selected international conservation projects too).
We are the major bird tour operator in Scandinavia. Magnus Ullman is still a tour leader and Erik rejoined the company as its Managing Director in 2016. Today, we have a staff of around 20 professional and dedicated tour leaders who make sure that our clients get the experience of a life-time with us. All our tour leaders and trips are continuously evaluated so we can ascertain that our clients’ interests are taken well care of.
AviFauna is fully insured as a professional tour agency, we have our travel guarantees deposited with Kammarkollegiet in accordance with the Travel Guarantees Act (1972:204) and we are a a member of and follow the recommendations made by The Swedish Association of Travel Agents. And on top of that, our clients are very pleased with our services: the average rating of our tour leaders is a staggering 4,7 on scale of 1-5 where 3 is average and 5 is top.

Managing Director and one of the original founders. He might join us for a dinner, or even a day in the field, especially on the Skåne trips, but is usually tied to his desk. Erik lives in Malmö and works half-time for AviFauna, spending the rest of his working time in Air Traffic Management and with his small publishing company. When he is off from work he travels, takes photos and spends time with his family. He has a certain fondness for Oman with over 20 visits there.
